Installation of ondulin: video instruction, material advantages, recommendations for arrangement and installation

In order to independently equip the roof, you may need to master such a technological operation as the installation of ondulin - the video instructions that you will find on the Internet will make it possible to understand the nuances, but in order to understand the general scheme, you still have to familiarize yourself with the theory.

So, what is such a roofing material as ondulin?

What is ondulin?

ondulin video editingOndulin is a kind of bituminous slate. This roofing material is profiled sheets of high-quality high-strength organic base impregnated with bitumen.

Impregnation is carried out at high temperature (+120-140C) and under high pressure - such conditions provide high strength of the resulting material, as well as its complete water tightness.

The main components of ondulin:

  • Cellulose fiber backing
  • mineral filler
  • Heat-strengthening resins
  • Mineral dyes (pigments)

Depending on what base structure is used for a particular brand of roofing, a unique texture is also formed - ondulin differs from other roofing materials with a recognizable "cloth" surface.

Benefits of ondulin

Ondulin is an extremely waterproof material

Ondulin is a fairly popular roofing material both in Europe (where, in fact, it was introduced to the mass market), and in our country.

Such popularity is primarily due to the high performance characteristics of ondulin:

  • Low level of water absorption - the base of ondulin impregnated with bituminous composition is absolutely waterproof, and does not absorb moisture even if it has been wetted for a long time.
  • Resistance to temperature extremes - ondulin tolerates both heat and cold equally well, and also is resistant to rapid temperature changes, while not cracking.
  • Biological and chemical inertness - despite the fact that ondulin is often based on organic materials (cellulose fiber), ondulin itself is resistant to bacteria, microorganisms and fungi. Also, ondulin is not damaged when exposed to acids and alkalis.
  • Oil resistance - ondulin is not destroyed even if mineral oils or diesel fuel get on it.This makes ondulin a material suitable for covering industrial buildings.
  • UV resistance - ondulin colors do not fade when exposed to sunlight.
  • Small mass - due to the use of organic materials in the composition, ondulin has a significantly lower (at least - compared to slate) mass. The use of ondulin as a roofing material significantly reduces the load on the roof frame.

Recommendations for the arrangement of an onduline roof

The technology of installation of a roof made of such material as ondulin practically does not differ from the technology of installation of a roof made of slate.

At the same time, the use of ondulin makes installation more comfortable, since the low weight of ondulin facilitates its lifting to a height and the very work with sheets of roofing material.

The first thing that will help you carry out the most effective installation is ondulin video instructions that you can find on the Internet. And to make this instruction as clear as possible, below we will give a number of recommendations for the implementation and organization of installation work.

They do not concern the process of laying roofing material itself, but they can significantly simplify the task before you:

  • Installation of a roof made of ondulin (see installation video of ondulin in the appendix to this article) can only be done at a positive temperature (from 0 to +30WITH). Installation is also allowed with a slight (up to -5C) frost, however, in this case, unpredictable consequences are possible, such as cracking of the roof, because.in the cold, ondulin becomes quite fragile.
  • For fastening ondulin we use special nails. The fastener consumption rate is 20 nails per sheet (for a ten-wave ondulin: 10 at the top of the sheet and 10 at the bottom). A large number of fasteners provides relatively light ondulin strength to wind loads
  • The configuration of the lathing under the ondulin roof depends on the slope of the roof slope. On slopes up to 10 degrees, we lay a sheathing of a continuous type made of oriented strand board or moisture-resistant plywood, on slopes up to 15 degrees - a lathing from a bar in increments of up to 45 cm. more than 15 degrees slope.
  • Sometimes the question arises - do you need waterproofing for ondulin? In principle, the properties of this roofing material make it possible to do without it. But still (especially if the attic or attic is insulated), hydro and vapor barrier should not be neglected. You can learn the technology of arranging waterproofing with the help of video instructions on request video installation of ondulin.
  • Despite the fact that due to the cellulose base, ondulin can “stretch” a little, it is impossible to lay it in an extended state (for example, if a few millimeters are missing from the joint) in no case. This is due to the fact that during thermal deformation, the stretched sheet of ondulin is highly likely to crack.
  • When moving along the roof from ondulin, you can only step on fixed sheets, while trying to stand on the upper crest of the wave.

After all preparations are completed, you can proceed directly to laying ondulin:

  • When installing ondulin, we lay the sheets of roofing material apart - so that the joints of one horizontal row are opposite the middle of the whole sheets of the adjacent row.
  • As for the overlap with which ondulin is laid, the video instruction recommends that for slopes up to 10 degrees, the side overlap be done in 2 waves, and the vertical overlap is about 30 cm. With a slope of up to 15 degrees, the side overlap is one wave, and the vertical overlap is 20 cm. To comply vertical overlap on ondulin sheets can be marked with a marker or colored pencil.
  • When fixing the ondulin, we fix the lower part in each wave, and the upper part - 5 nails each in the upper and middle parts with obligatory alternation.

Note! If ondulin is mounted on a metal crate, then instead of nails we use special self-tapping screws to fasten it. To speed up the work, we mount ondulin using a screwdriver with a special nozzle.

  • As the video recommends, ondulin on the ridge part is attached with a mandatory overlap of at least 10-12 cm. At the same time, we drive nails into each wave, and so that they fall into the bars of the crate.

We complete the installation andulin roofing installation of wind and cornice strips that protect sheets of roofing material from wind loads.

Using this technology, it is possible to equip a completely reliable and high-quality onduline roof. And if you take the time and study all the recommendations outlined in the video, the installation of ondulin will definitely not give you any worries!
