Andulin roof: the pros and cons of the material, installation, proper design of roofing ribs, rules and recommendations for installation and care
Andulin roofing is an original material produced by the French company Onduline. The use of this material is widespread in all parts of the world, both in the private and in the summer cottage sector. It is no less widely used in industrial and residential construction.
The organization of the roof from ondulin is divided into several types. Euro slate can be installed both on attic and attic roofs, with a lathing step of approximately 45 cm.
The step of the crate directly depends on the size roof slope.
The roofing sheet of this material is very light. Its size is 2 x 0.94 m, and its weight is 6 kg.
Among other things, ondulin is a less fragile material than slate. It is for this reason that it can be independently, without outside help, not only stacked, but also disassembled, while using only instructions and the necessary tool.
Not a significant loss of brightness, especially it is observed in brown euroslate.
The process of laying the material is similar to the technology of working with rubber slate. The difference from rubber slate lies in its non-toxicity to humans, significant strength and lightness.
Also, ondulin can be used for wall cladding, and, you see, the saturated colors of euroslate are much more pleasant for visual perception than ordinary gray slate.
The main colors are matte shades of green, red, black, brown.
Thanks to a good pricing policy, ease of installation and high performance, ondulin has gained its popularity and fame among consumers, and has also received many positive reviews.
Self-assembly
Ondulin colors
In order to save your budget and in order to get exactly the way you want the roof, you still have to lay ondulin with your own hands. This is not so difficult as it might seem at first glance, because this process does not require special preparation.
Installation of rafters is not included in the topic of the article. After installing the rafters, a crate made of a bar with a section of 50 by 50 mm is stuffed on them.
The distance along the slope between the bars is not more than the length of the foot, so that roof material it didn’t bend if a person’s foot stands on the roof, that is, about 200 mm, with a steep roof it can be less.
For self-covering the roof, you should follow some rules for the device of the crate:
If the roof slope is from 5 to 10 degrees, it is necessary to install a continuous crate made of wooden boards or plywood sheets. The end overlap of the roof sheets in this case should be 300 mm, the side overlap in 2 waves.
If the installation is carried out on a roof with a slope of 10 to 15 degrees, then a crate with a pitch of 450 mm may be required. The end overlap must be maintained within 200 mm, and the side overlap is equal to one wave.
With a slope of 15 degrees or more, the crate on the very roof must be carried out in steps of 600 mm in both directions. Do not forget about the end overlap, equal to 170 mm. Lateral overlap is provided by one wave.
If you follow the instructions exactly on all points, covering the roof with ondulin will be an easy task for you. Installation of sheets must be carried out in the following sequence:
Nail the battens to the rafters so that the required distance is maintained, which depends on the angle of the roof slope. In addition, it is necessary to maintain the parallelism of the entire crate relative to the eaves.
Saw sheets of euroslate with a hacksaw for wood, lubricating its teeth with machine oil. This method will avoid biting the tool. You can cut the material with a circular or hand saw.
Carry out the laying of ondulin, starting from the edge of the roof from where the wind blows. You need to fasten an even row from half a whole sheet. Thanks to this, in the corner at the junction, an overlap is obtained, consisting of 3 sheets, and not 4 sheets, in this case, installation is easier.
Nail euroslate sheets on both sides. The middle of the sheet is nailed through each wave. It is necessary to fasten the sheet with at least 20 special nails with a hat made of polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride, so that there is no corrosion.
Advice. . To ensure the clarity of the row of nails, it is necessary to use a stretched cord.
Decoration of overhangs and cornices
Attach the gutters to the eaves. In this case, the sheet should not protrude by more than 70 mm. To improve the waterproofing of the roof, it is necessary to use a special cornice box.
To the cornice you need to nail the so-called ventilation comb, which serves as protection against insects. A non-ventilated cornice is protected by a specialized cornice filler.
For the correct arrangement of the roofing ribs, it is necessary to nail a ridge along each of the sheet waves with an overlap of 12.5 cm, or a chip element.
Advice. Mark with colored pencil.
Proper design of roof ribs
Skate parts
In order for the roof to be properly framed with your own hands - ondulin, or rather, a chip from it, it is necessary to correctly fix the edges of the roof according to the following rules.
Bend and fasten the edge of the roofing sheet with nails on the chip board.
Waterproof the joints of the roof with the chimney using waterproofing tape.
Close the side joints with a valley. To secure it, you will have to install an additional crate.
Close the junction of the ends of the roof and walls with a covering apron. In the event that the length of one sheet of euroslate is 500 mm, then it is fixed to the crate, maintaining a step of 200 mm. The result is a tile effect.
You can get natural light in the attic by using transparent sheets or install a roof window that is easily nailed to the joints with the sheets.
Endova for euroslate
To provide the roof with good ventilation, a special roof fan is used, which is attached like a roof window.
Attention! The flooring scheme, as we have already said, is quite simple. Be sure to carefully read the installation manual before carrying out roofing work. The manual is always attached to the set of material and gives clear and useful advice, which is advisory in nature.
Advice. Remember that all specialists professionally involved in roofing work recommend using special nails for fixing ondulin, the caps of which are covered with polypropylene or polyvinyl chloride.
Rules and recommendations for laying
The process of laying euroslate requires mandatory compliance with the rules and the implementation of certain recommendations:
During installation, you should not walk between the roof waves, you need to put your foot on the crest of the wave.
It is necessary to carry out roofing work with ondulin only at positive temperatures, since at negative temperatures it is below 50O C, this coating may become more rigid. It is also not recommended to carry out work at a temperature of more than 30 O C.
Modern roofing technology with ondulin requires the mandatory driving of at least 20 nails into each sheet. If this warranty requirement is not observed, gusty winds may cause partial roof damage.
Care rules
Euroslate sheets do not require any special care. Of course, significant contamination of the roof, clogging with leaves and branches should not be allowed. This will extend the life of the coating and avoid premature damage.
After a considerable period of time, the color of the ondulin roof fades, in this case it will be possible to paint it from a spray can, only by choosing a shade.
The cost of installation work
Advice. If you want to replace the old slate with a new euroslate roof, you can not re-create the roofing cake for ondulin, but lay it directly on the existing roof.
Many summer residents, and not only, do not want to take risks, so they have to turn to highly qualified performers for help. In this case, the calculation of the cost of laying work will directly depend on the volume and complexity of the work performed.
The article discusses the rules for installing a roof made of ondulin, the properties of such a roof, its durability, and other issues related to the material.
