Soft roofing is gaining more and more popularity in modern construction, mainly due to its advantages, such as ease of installation and low cost. Therefore, our repair school has prepared a special topic for those who are interested in its installation - soft roofing: video lesson. We will talk about the intricacies of laying a soft roof using the example of flexible shingles Shinglas (SHINGLAS).
Introduction to the material
Shinglas is roofing material, which in terms of operational properties is not much inferior to rigid counterparts, such as slate or metal tiles. At the same time, it significantly surpasses the latter in its aesthetic qualities.
Flexible (bitumen) shingles are fiberglass shingles coated with a bituminous mixture on both sides, and then figuredly cut.
The front side also has a special colored topping, thanks to which bituminous tiles have earned the title of the perfect roofing material that can give the house a complete image.
The main advantage of shingles is that they can be used for roofs of any complexity, shape and configuration, up to domes and onion roofs (Footnote 1).
The main parameters characterizing the strength and reliability of flexible tiles include the type of base, tensile strength, maximum elongation, heat resistance for a certain time, mass, flexibility when fastened to a bar (Footnote 2).
Advice! Packages of shingles produced in different batches may vary slightly in tone. In order to avoid color imbalance, the contents of several packages must be mixed before installation.
General recommendations for work

After preparing the base, proceed to the main steps:
- installation of vapor barrier;
- installation of tiles directly.

Shingles fixing
As you can see from the video, the tiles must be further strengthened with nails. For this purpose, you need to use only special galvanized nails with wide hats.
It is very important to place them correctly:
- The head of the nail should be in the same plane as the surface of the shanglas itself, and in no case should it cut into it.
- The slope of the roof affects the number of nails.
- Nails are nailed at a distance of 2-3 cm from the edge of the tile.
- Each form of Shinglas requires its own arrangement of nails, shown in the figure.
- It is also necessary to take into account the location of the nails relative to the adhesive layer - it is marked in the figure with a dotted line.
Quality above all
If you opted for bituminous tiles, you should pay attention to the quality of the fit of the material both during its installation and after many years of operation.
One of the most vulnerable places that can reduce the reliability of the roof are the points of junction with utilities (for example, at the junction with pipes).
The integrity of the coating should be checked during operation. When violations are detected or leaks occur, it becomes necessary to replace the damaged areas.
