In European countries, aluminum slate has been used as roofing for many years. This material has proven itself both from a practical point of view and from an aesthetic point of view. Due to what the material is popular and thus it is installed, we will consider in this article.
Advantages of aluminum coating
Aluminum-based coatings have many advantages, of which we will highlight only the main ones:
- This metal is not subject to corrosion, as it tends to create a protective oxygen film around itself, the violation of which can only be achieved by exposure to alkali or other kinds of chemical solutions. For this reason, aluminum slate is often used in areas with high humidity.
- Light weight roofing material (aluminum is the lightest metal) makes roofing very light and allows aluminum roofing to be used in buildings where, for technical reasons, no other roofing material can be used. Such material will significantly save on the device do-it-yourself slate roofs (rafter system), as well as on the foundation of the structure, since, in comparison with other coatings, it has an almost imperceptible weight.
- The aluminum roof tolerates the impact of complex atmospheric phenomena well: it is not afraid of hail or strong winds.
- The aluminum coating is capable of reflecting up to 90% of solar radiation, therefore it serves as a kind of mirror “shield” of the house, which in hot weather will become insurance against overheating of the house, and in cold weather it will contribute to the even melting of snow on the roof without the formation of dangerous ice crusts.
- Due to the flexibility of aluminum, it can be used as a roof covering even with the most intricate reliefs. . For buildings with a complex roof structure, aluminum slate will become an indispensable material.
Selection of aluminum roofing material and its installation
Of the entire range of aluminum products offered by manufacturers, corrugated aluminum sheets are most often used as roofing material.
They are light and durable and, among other things, do not require special knowledge in the field of professional installation.
The rules for installing a roof made of aluminum slate are as follows:
- Almost all metal roofing materials are laid using the seam method, and aluminum roofing is no exception.
- Installation of aluminum roofing is carried out without screwing nails and self-tapping screws directly into the roofing sheets.
- For laying an aluminum folded roof, both a solid and a sparse crate are prepared, using a wooden beam of coniferous species, as a rule, 50 * 50 mm.
- The pitch of the crate is usually provided for no more than 25 cm, since if the pitch is increased, the aluminum sheets can bend, and this will lead to a weakening of the seam connection.
- At the joints of the roof slopes, in any case, a continuous sheathing is provided.
- When laying sheets of aluminum slate, some compensation thermal gap is always left between them.
- Sheets are laid similarly to other types of roofing, however, they are fastened using special clamps.
- Clamps are attached to the crate using self-tapping screws or wide-head nails at intervals of 300-400mm.
- The subsequent aluminum sheet is laid only after fixing the previous one.
- When fastening the clamps to the crate, make sure that the nails (self-tapping screws) enter the crate at a strictly right angle.
- After the clamp is installed and fixed, its front edge is folded and pressed to the bottom.
Advice! Before laying aluminum sheets, ensure cleanliness, evenness and dryness of the crate.
