Almost all old-style dachas, of which there are still quite a lot in the entire CIS, as a rule, are covered with the only material widely available at that time - asbestos cement slate. Repair of a roof in a dacha made of slate, which is usually required after one or two decades of operation of such a coating, is not too complicated and can be easily done by hand.
Damage assessment
Often, when repairing, you can do without replacing the slate sheets, limiting yourself only to applying patches. If the scale of damage is not compatible with a small fake, do not despair - you will be able to replace a couple of damaged sheets.

Preparation for repair
Before repairing the country roof, care must be taken to clean the repair sites from debris and dust. For best effect, you can rinse the roof with water from a hose.
At the end of the washing of the roof (during its drying), they are taken for the preparation of a repair composition, which will require the following components:
- PVA glue;
- asbestos (ready fluffed or self-rubbed sheet asbestos on a fine grater);
- cement brand not less than M300.
Advice! Manipulations with asbestos should only be done with a respirator on.
The repair mixture for applying patches to slate is prepared in the following way:
- mix 2 parts of cement of the specified brand with 3 parts of prepared asbestos;
- the prepared composition is poured with a mixture of water with PVA glue in a ratio of 1: 1 and the solution is thoroughly mixed until a thick creamy consistency is obtained.
Upon completion of the preparation of the mixture, they proceed directly to the repair of the roof.
Patching
The damaged parts of the country slate roof are primed with PVA glue, diluted in a ratio of 1: 3. Then the damage is filled with the prepared mixture at least twice, so that the thickness of the applied layer is more than 2 mm.
Roof repair it is better to perform in cloudy dry weather, which can ensure uniform slow drying of the repair mixture, which will allow the patch to gain more strength.

Slate replacement
If the roof of a country house is significantly damaged and cannot be repaired, then the only way to remedy the situation is to dismantle the old coating and then lay new sheets.
The replacement of a slate roof is carried out by the following method:
- Dismantle the old coating and evaluate whether the formwork and rafters are suitable. If necessary, they are replaced or repaired.
- In order to ensure high tightness of the coating, a layer of roofing material or an insulating layer is laid on the rafters. roof material of a different kind.
- Next, proceed to laying the slate coating. Sheets are mounted starting from the bottom corner diagonally to the opposite corner of the roof. Only in this way can a geometrically correct laying of roofing sheets with the necessary overlap be ensured.
Advice! Roofing work in the country should be carried out with proper insurance and in compliance with safety rules.
- The horizontal overlap is arranged at least the width of one slate wave.
- Upon completion of laying the first horizontal row slate roof mount the second row with an overlap of 10 or more centimeters.
- Sheets that require cutting for laying at the edges of the roof or at the locations of chimneys are cut using a grinder with a diamond blade installed.
- Slate is attached to the crate with special slate nails. To prevent the formation of microcracks and chips, nails are driven into the crest of the sheet wave.
