Quite a lot has already been written about the laying of such material as ondulin, but little is mentioned, for example, how to lay the ondulin covering the apron, as well as many other nuances in laying the coating itself and its components.
We decided to try to fill this gap and tell the reader about the little-known rules and nuances in laying ondulin roofing, as well as about the components that are mandatory used when installing ondulin roofing.
Onduline roof components and methods of their installation
As for the beginning of laying the coating, here the sheets are laid with an overhang from the edge of the crate of 3-5 cm.To close the gaps under the roofing cornice, a universal ventilated filler is used, which is used to protect against the penetration of insects and birds into the under-roof space.
At the same time, the element does not create obstacles for roof ventilation. Laying, as a rule, begins from the opposite edge relative to the side of the roof prevailing in the winds.
The next row of roofing sheets is mounted, starting from half of the sheet to achieve an overlap at the corner joint of not 4 x, but 3 x sheets.
If it is planned to arrange an ondulin under the tile, it is additionally necessary to lay a crate on it for its fastening.
Advice! It is necessary to observe the correctness and order of driving nails in order to avoid deformation of the sheets of material. Nails are hammered first into the extreme side waves of the sheet, then into the central wave, and then into all the remaining ones at a strictly right angle to the peak of the euroslate wave crest.
Ondulin components have the following parameters and device methods:
- The length of the gable element ondulin is 1.04 m, of which 0.96 m is the useful length (8 cm falls on the overlap). The installation of gable elements starts from the roof eaves and continues to the ridge, providing for the required overlap. The point of overlap is the transverse protrusions provided on the elements.
- When designing a ridge, an ondulin ridge element 1.06 m long (useful length 0.98 m and 8 cm overlap), an end ridge element with similar characteristics and a cover apron element 1.02 m long (useful length 0.98 and 4 cm overlap) are used.
- When making a ridge, an ondulin covering apron is installed on both connected slopes with a 4 cm overlap.The upper edges of the covering aprons located on different slopes are placed at a distance of at least 2 cm from each other in order to ensure the possibility of a full exit of air. Ridge elements are arranged over the junction of aprons. Along the edges of the ridge, end ridge elements are installed on each side, which prevents the need to install plugs. When laying ridge elements, their fastening is carried out in each wave of the roofing sheet located below in additional lathing bars.
- Vapor barrier: when creating a warm roof, ondulin must be laid with a vapor barrier layer, while with a cold roof and its sufficient ventilation, it can be neglected.
- When designing roof ribs, a ridge element and an end element are also used. roof ridge and an additional breathable insulating pad 5 m long and 15 cm wide. During the design of the ribs, the seam of the slopes is sealed with an insulating pad. Ridge elements with an overlap of 8 cm are mounted on top of it, end ridge elements are installed along the edges of the joint. The elements are attached by analogy with the main roofing ridge of the roof.

- When designing roof valleys, special valley elements ondulin 1 m long are used (useful length 0.85 m and 15 cm overlap). An additional crate is provided for fastening these elements. On device valley roofstypically use underlayment waterproofing to protect the roof from leaks and universal ventilated core to provide protection from debris and birds.
Some components of the onduline roof - The junctions are made using a covering apron 1.02 long (useful length 0.79 m with an overlap of 1 wave) and Onduflash-Super (metal-coated waterproofing tape 2.5 m long and 0.3 m wide). First, a cover apron is installed at the bottom of the pipe and nailed to each wave of the underlying cover. With the help of Onduflash-Super, the joint of the apron with the wall is sealed. Next, with the help of a tape, side joints and the upper part of the pipe are arranged. The tape is brought onto a vertical surface by at least 10-15 cm. The apron and tape are pressed against the pipe (or wall) with a profile or a metal bar.
- Advice! At the end, the tape must be covered with an additional cover sheet.
- When installing a ventilation outlet, a special roof fan or a ventilation pipe with a base size of 0.4 * 0.48 m can be used. The top of the base is covered with the next type of coating sheets.
- Snow retainers for ondulin are installed around the entire perimeter of the roof or, with a small roof area or an insignificant level of snow precipitation, only in places of increased risk of snow melting - above the entrances to the structure, above the attic windows, downpipes, etc.
Advice! A fence made of ondulin will help to achieve perfect color harmony, since it is quite difficult to choose the color of corrugated board or paint for slate that matches the color of ondulin sheets. Fastening should be done with nails with decorative caps.
