Do you need to repair a flat roof or put a new roof covering on a roof with a minimal slope? I will talk about one of the most popular materials - Bikrost. You will learn the main characteristics of this option, and as a bonus, I will describe the process of laying a roll roof.

The material is sold in rolls of 10-15 meters.

Material Features

First, we will analyze the technical characteristics of the Bikrost material, and then we will figure out how to properly lay it.

Characteristics

Sold two layers of roofing carpet - the lower and upper.The first option is used as a vapor barrier and waterproofing, it is used as the basis for the top coat. The main purpose of the top layer is protection from moisture and resistance to atmospheric degradation and ultraviolet radiation.

There are several brands of each type of product, let's break down their main indicators, and start from the bottom layer:

Indicators Material Grades
EPP CCI HPP
Weight per square meter 3,0 3,06 3,0
Length per roll 15 meters 15 meters 15 meters
Flexibility temperature on R25 mm bar, ºС
Maximum operating temperature 80 ºС 80 ºС 80 ºС
The weight of the binder composition from the bottom side, kg/sq.m. 1,5 1,5 1,5
Tensile strength along the roll, N 343 600 294
Water absorption by weight during the day,% - no more 1,0 1,0 1,0
Base material Polyester fiberglass fiberglass

The side for welding is always indicated on the roll, there is a corresponding inscription on it.

On the bottom side of the canvas there is an inscription indicating that this particular part is intended for fusing

According to the table, it is not difficult to understand the features of the coverage. Let's analyze, for example, Bikrost HPP - what it is and what the material is intended for. This option is made on the basis of fiberglass, it is good as a protective under the top layer, but it cannot be used as a protective coating on plinths or other surfaces due to its low strength. In such cases, fiberglass-based CCI is better suited, it is much stronger.

Bikrost is covered with a polymer film on both sides, it protects the deposited layer from damage, it does not need to be removed during heating.

Bicrost of the lower layer is covered with a polymer film on both sides, by this feature it is easy to distinguish the lining carpet from the upper one.

The top layer of roofing material has the following characteristics:

Weight of binder from the bottom side, kg/sq.m. Minimum 1.5 Minimum 1.5 Minimum 1.5
Powder loss, grams per sample 1,0 1,0 1,0
Heat resistance, degrees - not less 80 80 80

Roll length 10 m 10 m 10 m
Base material Polyester fiberglass fiberglass

This type of material is distinguished by the fact that on the upper side it is protected by a coarse-grained dressing, which serves to increase strength and durability. On the underside, it has the same polymer film.

As for the general characteristics, the most important of them are listed below:

  • Life time. According to the documentation, the warranty period for the operation of the roof on which the material is laid is 7 years. In fact, the coating can serve up to 15 years;
  • Regions of use. The material is suitable for use in all regions specified in SNiP 23-01;
  • Fire safety indicators. Combustibility group - G4 (GOST 30244). Fire propagation group RP4 according to GOST R 51032. Ignition group - B3 according to GOST 30402.

The price of the material depends on the brand, the bottom layer will cost you from 55 to 75 rubles per square meter, and the top one - from 62 to 85 rubles per square. Prices are current for spring 2017.

Rolls can only be stored in a vertical position. It is best to fold it indoors, you can leave it outside for a short time.

I am often asked the question, what is better for plinth insulation - roofing material or Bikrost? In fact, these are different materials, the roofing material is simply laid, and the Bikrost is welded, thereby providing a higher quality of protection against moisture. If reliability is important to you, choose the second option.

Coating tips

Let's briefly figure out how to lay Bikrost:

Illustration Description of stages
table_pic_att14926264217 The surface is being prepared:
  • The roof is cleaned of the remnants of the old coating and carefully swept;
  • A primer is applied to the surface. Instructions for its use are simple: the composition is mixed and distributed with a roller over the entire base.
table_pic_att14926264228 Laying the first layer is done like this:
  • To do the work with your own hands, you need a gas burner;
  • The roll is spread on the surface and leveled on it. After it rolls back;
  • Bikrost laying starts from the edge: a strip of material warms up and sticks to the surface. The roll gradually unwinds as it warms up.

  • The joints of the upper and lower layers should not match (the photo shows the optimal offset);
  • The bikrost gently warms up and presses, constantly monitor the joint, a bitumen roller should protrude on it, this indicates a reliable connection.

Conclusion

Now you know everything about Bikrost and, if you wish, you can lay it yourself. The video in this article will clearly explain some important nuances, and if something is not clear to you, ask in the comments.
