A metal roof is a great choice

metal tile roofThe metal tile is molded steel sheets coated with polymeric materials, which make it extremely resistant to any influences and temperature changes. Lightweight metal sheets do not overload the roof with excess weight, they are suitable for almost any climatic zone. A universal roof made of metal tiles is not only practical, its cost is low, and installation surprises with its speed and ease.

What is the material

A standard metal tile sheet consists of the following layers:

  • The main layer is a sheet of steel, painted from the wrong side;
  • Galvanized layer;
  • A passivating layer that protects the zinc surface from oxidation;
  • A layer of primer for the best adhesion to the painting;
  • Painted in various colors.

Depending on the tastes and requirements of the buyer, it is possible to make roofs from metal tiles of various colors and shades, as well as choose sheets of the desired thickness.

The coating also differs in materials and quality, so there will be no difficulties in selecting the right roof.

The ability to perfectly fit the joints to each other, a beautiful presentable design as a result make this roofing material extremely popular, unlike conventional slate roof.

Preparatory work

Layers of metal tiles

After acquiring the right amount of working material, you should prepare the roof for work. The roof covering is dismantled if the building is not new and already had a roof.

In order for the device of the metal roof to be reliable and durable, all possible distortions should be corrected and the slopes should be leveled.

Note! To check for defects in the geometry of the roof, you should measure the slopes diagonally from corner to corner. In cases of distortions, the shortcomings are corrected by making a crate, and the end distortions are corrected with additional details. Then ventilation, chimneys and other communications are brought out.

Attention should be paid to gable roof angle, for example, it is desirable that it be at least 14-15 ° per 6 meters of the slope surface. With a slope length of 7 meters or more, the decking sheets must be divided into two or more parts and laid with a slight overlap.

In order to learn how to make a roof from a metal tile, it is enough to study in detail the instructions for its installation.

We make a crate

Installation follows the preparatory work, and it must begin with the design of the crate. Rafters are made at a distance of 60 to 90 cm from each other.

For the manufacture of rafters, a wooden beam with dimensions from 15x5cm and boards from 10x2.5cm is well suited. For a counter-lattice, a board with dimensions of 5x2.5cm will be acceptable.

Strictly in a straight line, along the overhang of the cornice, the first board is nailed. Its thickness should be 1-1.5 cm more than the next ones in order to compensate for the difference in the places of support of the tile elements, starting from the first one.

Between the board facing the cornice and the next, the distance is 5 cm less. Subsequent boards are strengthened at a distance of 350 to 450 mm (depending on the size of the tiles).

Further, the installation of a roof made of metal tiles continues with the design of the wind and ridge trims. Then you can proceed to attach the drainage system around the perimeter of the roof.

For gutters, brackets are installed on the lower crate board at a distance of about 50 cm from each other, taking into account the future slight slope of the gutters for water drainage. Gutters are attached to the brackets and the cornice strip is installed on the crate.

Waterproofing and insulation

After the crate is ready, it is necessary to arrange a waterproofing and insulating layers. First, it is desirable to lay a layer of vapor barrier film.

It will protect the subsequent insulation layer from steam coming from inside the building. At the seams, the film is fastened with a special tape, which will make the joints strong and airtight.

A heater is laid on the vapor barrier layer, and a waterproofing layer is placed on top.It will prevent the ingress of moisture from the outside to the insulating material.

In order for the construction of a roof made of metal tiles not to bring trouble in the results, it is necessary to follow the sequence of work.

Therefore, the waterproofing membrane must be mounted very carefully, following the high-quality fastening and sealing of the joints. It is recommended to lay the membrane in the direction across the slopes.

Its parts are joined overlapping with a small margin, then the finished flooring is finally fixed with a counter-lattice, and at the highest point of the roof - with a ridge.

One of the advantages of insulation, which is laid on the roof under the coating, is its soundproofing properties.

During its installation, additional noise insulation of the roof made of metal tiles is also achieved, which is important in places with a high level of unwanted sounds. For buildings close to the road, airport, railway tracks, additional roof protection will come in handy.

For heated premises, it is imperative to lay the insulating layers in the correct sequence. In the case of installation of roofing for utility and other non-residential premises where heating is not provided, only a layer of waterproofing can be laid.

Cutting and installation of tiles

Roofing from a metal tile

Before the roofing of the roof with metal tiles begins, it is necessary to measure all the dimensions of the prepared roof - from the ridge to the eaves.

With complex geometry and the presence of a large number of protrusions, drops, turrets and other things, all the nuances are taken into account when cutting the coating elements. Cut the sheets of tiles in the necessary places with special cutting scissors.

It is forbidden to use abrasive cutters, as such machines overheat the sheets during cutting and destroy the protective coating on them.

When the preparation of the roof for the metal tile is fully completed, the installation of sheets can begin. If the roof is gable, work begins from the end of the left side, on a tent-type roof - from the highest place, moving evenly in both directions.

When the sheets are stacked from right to left, then each subsequent sheet is placed under the edge of the previous one. The edges of the last sheets are set below the eaves by 4-5 cm.

In order for the metal tile roof structure to be correct and durable, the laying order is as follows: the first sheet is reinforced with a self-tapping screw to the crate, in a place near the ridge.

Next, you need to lay the second sheet in such a way that its lower edges form a straight line.

With the help of a screw, you should fasten the overlap along the top of the wave under the very first fold that runs across. In this case, the screw should not touch the crate.

If it seemed that the sheets were not joined evenly, you should lift the top sheet, and then lay the folds in sequence from bottom to top on top of each other, fastening with screws.

At the same time, make sure that the screws of the crate do not touch. Screws or self-tapping screws will be required for each square meter of coverage from 6 to 8 pieces.

After fastening 3-4 sheets to each other, the lowest edge should be aligned exactly with the eaves, after which the sheets can be fixed completely.

When installing, make sure that the sheets are minimally deformed and scratched. Wear soft shoes, do not put heavy objects on the roof to avoid damage to the material.

If chips or scratches on the metal tile are still present, you can restore them with paint intended for this kind of repair.

Additional roof protection

how to make a metal roof
This can happen if the metal of the roof is not grounded.

A roof covered with metal is not immune from lightning strikes. This can lead to quite a lot of trouble if you do not protect it from the undesirable effects of the natural elements.

Otherwise, household electrical appliances may fail, and this poses a rather great danger to the health and life of the owners of the house.

In order to live in peace, without fear for safety, during installation, it is necessary to ground the roof from a metal tile. To remove lightning, there are antenna, rod and mesh protection. Rod and antenna are considered the most common and popular.

Rod protection is a small metal rod that is mounted on the roof and connected to ground. The mesh is more difficult, while the mesh should cover the entire roof and is also connected to the ground.
