The process of roof insulation includes several steps:
Step 1: prepare the truss system
Before insulating the roof of the house, be sure to prepare the truss system as follows:

 | Treatment of wooden construction with an antiseptic. Use a special protective impregnation for these purposes. You can apply it to wooden surfaces with a paint brush or sprayer. |
 | Waterproofing. If there is no waterproofing under the roofing or it has become unusable, fix the membrane to the rafters. Use a stapler to mount the film. Additionally, secure the waterproofing with battens that are nailed to the rafters. |
If rot or cracks are found on the elements of the truss system, they must be replaced or strengthened.
Step 2: insulate the roof
All types of roofs of houses can be divided into two types:
- pitched;
- Flat.
The process of installing thermal insulation depends on the type of roof, so we will consider both options below.
Pitched roof insulation:

The insulation layer must be at least 100 mm thick, in the northern regions it is better to use 150 mm thick thermal insulation. If the thickness of the rafters is not enough, you can fix the bars across them and lay the second layer of insulation.
If the roof of the house is flat, the work is done differently:

 | Padding. Treat the board surface with adhesive primer using a paint roller in two coats. |
 | Glue preparation. Mix the dry adhesive with water and mix thoroughly with an electric drill with a mixer attachment. Then let the glue brew for 5-7 minutes, and mix again. |
 | Applying adhesive to the board. Lay lumps of glue around the perimeter of the insulation board and in the center.
If the ceiling is level, apply the adhesive mortar in a continuous, even layer, and then smooth with a notched trowel. |

| Bonding insulation. Attach the plate to the ceiling and press lightly.
According to this principle, the thermal insulation of the entire flat roof is carried out. |
 | Do-it-yourself installation of dowels:

 | Mesh gluing:
Position the canvases relative to each other with an overlap of 15 centimeters, as well as with a twist at the corners. |
 | Applying a second layer of glue. After the ceiling surface has dried, apply a second layer of adhesive a few millimeters thick. |
Roof insulation can also be done in a frame way. In this case, beams are attached to the ceiling, after which the work is carried out according to the same principle as the thermal insulation of a pitched roof.
This completes the insulation of the flat roof. Now the ceiling can be puttied and painted, or covered with other finishing materials.
Step 3: insulate the gables
If the roof of the house is gable, be sure to insulate the gables. The instructions for doing this work look like this:

 | Frame installation. Fix racks made of bars or metal profiles on the pediment. To make the frame even, first install the end posts, then pull the twine between them to align the intermediate posts. |
 | Heater installation. Lay thermal insulation in the space between the racks. You can fix the thermal insulation with dowels or even boards, as in the photo example. |
 | Steam barrier installation. Attach a vapor barrier membrane over the racks. |
 | Lathing installation. Fix wooden slats or boards to the racks. |
When choosing a mineral insulation, give preference to basalt wool, despite the fact that its price is the highest. The fact is that this material is more environmentally friendly than slag and glass wool.
Step 4: insulate the floor
If the attic is used as a living space, it is highly desirable to perform thermal insulation of the ceiling. This procedure depends on the type of overlap, which can be:
- Wooden;
- Concrete.
Thermal insulation of wooden floors is carried out as follows:

 | Cover insulation. Lay thermal insulation in the space between the lags. |

Before insulating the floor, wooden beams must also be treated with an antiseptic.
The process of insulating a concrete floor looks a little different:

 | Floor waterproofing. Lay a waterproofing film on the floor with a twist on the walls. Glue the joints of the film with adhesive tape. |
 | Insulation lining. Lay the insulation boards on the floor close to each other. |
 | Screed filling. The work is performed according to the standard scheme without any features, so I will not describe it. |
On top of the wooden floor, you can make a floor on the logs. In this case, the insulation is carried out according to the same principle as the thermal insulation of a wooden floor, that is, the insulation is placed in the space between the lags.
