Work performance technology

The process of roof insulation includes several steps:

Stages of insulation
Stages of insulation

Step 1: prepare the truss system

Before insulating the roof of the house, be sure to prepare the truss system as follows:

Illustrations Description of works
table_pic_att14909575223 Preparation of materials. To perform this operation you will need:
  1. Antiseptic impregnation for wood.
  2. Waterproofing membrane. It is required only if waterproofing was not used during the installation of the roof of the house.
table_pic_att14909575254 Treatment of wooden construction with an antiseptic. Use a special protective impregnation for these purposes. You can apply it to wooden surfaces with a paint brush or sprayer.
table_pic_att14909575275 Waterproofing. If there is no waterproofing under the roofing or it has become unusable, fix the membrane to the rafters.

Use a stapler to mount the film. Additionally, secure the waterproofing with battens that are nailed to the rafters.

If rot or cracks are found on the elements of the truss system, they must be replaced or strengthened.

Step 2: insulate the roof

All types of roofs of houses can be divided into two types:

  1. pitched;
  2. Flat.

The process of installing thermal insulation depends on the type of roof, so we will consider both options below.

Pitched roof insulation:

Illustrations Description of works
table_pic_att14909575356 Preparation of materials. For roof insulation you will need:
  • Plate heater. It can be mineral wool, polystyrene or extruded polystyrene foam;
  • Vapor barrier.
  • Reiki. Thickness should be at least 2 cm, width at least 3-4 cm;
  • Nylon twine;
  • Nails.
table_pic_att14909575527 Stretching a kapron thread:
  • Step back from the waterproofing one and a half to two centimeters, and nail the carnations to the logs in 10 cm increments. The hats should stick out a few millimeters;
  • Pull the nylon cord in a zigzag manner, as shown in the photo, tying it to the studs.

A stretched thread will provide a ventilation gap between the hydro- and vapor barrier.

table_pic_att14909575558 Vapor barrier installation:

  • Fasten the membrane to the rafters using a stapler;
  • At the joints of the canvases, provide an overlap of about 15 cm. Glue the seams with adhesive tape.

Keep in mind that when laying polymer insulation on the roof, you do not need to use a vapor barrier.

table_pic_att14909575569 Insulation installation:

  • Lay the heat-insulating plates in the space between the lags so that they fit snugly against them;
  • To fix the heat-insulating material, drive carnations into the rafters, and pull a nylon thread between them in a zigzag manner.
table_pic_att149095755810 Steam barrier installation. On the rafter legs, you need to fix the second layer of the vapor barrier using a stapler.
table_pic_att149095755911 Lathing installation. Nail wooden slats or planks over the vapor barrier. They can be placed both along the rafters and across, depending on the finishing coating that you will use.

The insulation layer must be at least 100 mm thick, in the northern regions it is better to use 150 mm thick thermal insulation. If the thickness of the rafters is not enough, you can fix the bars across them and lay the second layer of insulation.

If the roof of the house is flat, the work is done differently:

Illustrations Description of works
table_pic_att149095756312 Preparation of materials. To insulate a flat roof, you will need:
  • Thermal insulation. It is necessary to use slabs of facade grades - foam plastic with a density of at least 25 kg / m3, mineral wool with a density of at least 100 kgm3;
  • Glue for insulation. It is selected individually, depending on the type of insulation;
  • Plastic dish-shaped dowels;
  • Fiberglass reinforcing mesh;
  • adhesive primer.
table_pic_att149095756513 Padding. Treat the board surface with adhesive primer using a paint roller in two coats.
table_pic_att149095756614 Glue preparation. Mix the dry adhesive with water and mix thoroughly with an electric drill with a mixer attachment.

Then let the glue brew for 5-7 minutes, and mix again.

table_pic_att149095756715 Applying adhesive to the board. Lay lumps of glue around the perimeter of the insulation board and in the center.

If the ceiling is level, apply the adhesive mortar in a continuous, even layer, and then smooth with a notched trowel.

Gluing insulation
Gluing insulation
Bonding insulation. Attach the plate to the ceiling and press lightly.

According to this principle, the thermal insulation of the entire flat roof is carried out.

table_pic_att149095757217 Do-it-yourself installation of dowels:

  1. Drill a hole through the insulation. The depth should be 1 cm more than the length of the dowel;
  2. Insert a dowel with a nail into the hole;
  3. Hammer the nail so that the dowel is a few millimeters deep.
table_pic_att149095757418 Mesh gluing:
  1. Apply glue to the surface of the insulation;
  2. Attach a fiberglass mesh to the area treated with glue;
  3. Sweep over the mesh with a spatula so that it is completely covered with glue.

Position the canvases relative to each other with an overlap of 15 centimeters, as well as with a twist at the corners.

table_pic_att149095757719 Applying a second layer of glue. After the ceiling surface has dried, apply a second layer of adhesive a few millimeters thick.

Roof insulation can also be done in a frame way. In this case, beams are attached to the ceiling, after which the work is carried out according to the same principle as the thermal insulation of a pitched roof.

This completes the insulation of the flat roof. Now the ceiling can be puttied and painted, or covered with other finishing materials.

Step 3: insulate the gables

If the roof of the house is gable, be sure to insulate the gables. The instructions for doing this work look like this:

Illustrations Description of works
table_pic_att149095758420 Materials:
  1. Wooden bars or metal profiles;
  2. Plate heat-insulating material;
  3. Vapor barrier.
table_pic_att149095758621 Rail installation. Fasten the slats in a horizontal position in increments of 50 cm vertically and 1-2 cm vertically.
table_pic_att149095758822 Installation of vapor barrier. Fasten the vapor barrier membrane to the rails with a stapler, ensuring that the sheets overlap.
table_pic_att149095759123 Frame installation. Fix racks made of bars or metal profiles on the pediment.

To make the frame even, first install the end posts, then pull the twine between them to align the intermediate posts.

table_pic_att149095759424 Heater installation. Lay thermal insulation in the space between the racks. You can fix the thermal insulation with dowels or even boards, as in the photo example.
table_pic_att149095759625 Steam barrier installation. Attach a vapor barrier membrane over the racks.
table_pic_att149095760026 Lathing installation. Fix wooden slats or boards to the racks.

When choosing a mineral insulation, give preference to basalt wool, despite the fact that its price is the highest. The fact is that this material is more environmentally friendly than slag and glass wool.

Step 4: insulate the floor

If the attic is used as a living space, it is highly desirable to perform thermal insulation of the ceiling. This procedure depends on the type of overlap, which can be:

  • Wooden;
  • Concrete.

Thermal insulation of wooden floors is carried out as follows:

Illustrations Description of works
table_pic_att149095760127 materials:
  • Thermal insulation. You can use not only slabs, but also loose heat-insulating materials (ecowool or wood shavings);
  • Vapor barrier.
table_pic_att149095760328 Vapor barrier installation. Lay the vapor barrier on the floor beams and underlayment.
table_pic_att149095760629 Cover insulation. Lay thermal insulation in the space between the lags.
table_pic_att149095760830 Vapor barrier installation. Lay another layer of vapor barrier on top of the log and insulation.

Before insulating the floor, wooden beams must also be treated with an antiseptic.

The process of insulating a concrete floor looks a little different:

Illustrations Description of works
table_pic_att149095761131 Preparation of materials. To insulate a flat roof, you will need:
  1. High density plate insulation;
  2. Waterproofing;
  3. Materials for pouring screed.
table_pic_att149095761332 Floor waterproofing. Lay a waterproofing film on the floor with a twist on the walls. Glue the joints of the film with adhesive tape.
table_pic_att149095761533 Insulation lining. Lay the insulation boards on the floor close to each other.
table_pic_att149095761634 Screed filling. The work is performed according to the standard scheme without any features, so I will not describe it.

On top of the wooden floor, you can make a floor on the logs. In this case, the insulation is carried out according to the same principle as the thermal insulation of a wooden floor, that is, the insulation is placed in the space between the lags.

That's all the information on how to properly insulate the roof of the house, which I wanted to share with you.
