Symmetry and asymmetry: what type of furniture arrangement to choose

Where can you find comfort, warmth and harmony? Only in my own apartment. It is there that you can comfortably relax and enjoy peace. Harmonious design, soft colors, properly arranged furniture. But sometimes a cozy apartment can instantly turn into a place where chaos and confusion reign. And the reason for this may be the asymmetric arrangement of headset items.

In total, there are only 2 types of furniture arrangement: symmetrical (equidistant) and asymmetric (arbitrary). To create a cozy design of a residential apartment, you should resort to a symmetrical look. In turn, the asymmetric layout is suitable for those apartments where one of the modern design styles will be embodied. For example, loft.

Symmetrical layout

Symmetry is harmony. There is nothing better than a flat-set headset, made in the same color scheme. Or a pair of cozy armchairs, equidistantly located from the soft sofa. The harmonious combination of any pieces of furniture and their planned placement in the room is the key to a feeling of comfort and peace. After all, the only goal of every person's life is balance inside and out.

And balance is difficult to achieve if, for example, the bedroom looks like an extravagant workshop of a skilled creator! Symmetry can be reflected not only in observing all the axes of the room, but also in the smallest details of the headset - in mirrors, shelves, lamps. And a properly set table can help separate one “piece” of symmetry from another.

Asymmetrical layout

Most often, asymmetry is associated with some kind of chaos and even "mess". However, in many design decisions, it is asymmetry that plays a major role. For example, when a designer decides to combine black velvet curtains with a white lacquered coffee table. Is it asymmetry? Yes. After all, colors and textures are contrasted here.

But in order to resort to asymmetry in the arrangement of furniture and at the same time not spoil the overall feeling of comfort, you need to remember a few important rules:

  • asymmetry in space should be introduced not by bulky pieces of furniture, but by small accessories;
  • playing with the size of furniture and its color is preferable to randomness in the arrangement of similar pieces of furniture;
  • in an asymmetric project, there must be a “center” (a fireplace or a table with many pendant lights).

Mixing symmetry with asymmetry

A great way to create a modern style and at the same time bring comfort, will be the way of combining, or "mixing", two opposite ways of arranging furniture. An example would be an elongated dining table located in the center of the room, on one side of which there will be high wooden chairs, and on the other - wide upholstered poufs or armchairs.

Such a mix will help even when receiving guests, when everyone can accommodate in the way that is convenient for him. Despite the fact that comfort and asymmetry are directly opposite concepts that do not harmonize with each other, they can still be combined, and this can be done very successfully!
