If you have a private house, then you do not need to explain what an attic is. The area of \u200b\u200bthe house rarely allows you to install a stationary staircase to exit to the attic. You can be content with a stepladder, however, for a number of reasons, this is also not the best option.
Special folding attic stairs are much more convenient.

Types of folding stairs
Folding stairs to the attic can be located both indoors and outdoors, the only difference is that the first design is more comfortable to use, since you don’t have to go outside to climb to the second floor. In addition, it does not come into contact with cold air in winter, keeping the room warm and making it easy to use. (see also article How to make a roof ladder)
They are:
- scissor (photo) - this is a staircase made entirely of metal, which looks like an "accordion".

- folding (folding) - these are several sections that, as they open, gradually move forward, but only thanks to the work of special hinges and hinges.

- Telescopic or sliding (photo) - this is a lot of ladders that fit one into the other, usually made of aluminum.

How to make a folding ladder to the attic
A do-it-yourself folding ladder to the attic is a simple and convenient option, so it will not be difficult to assemble it.
In a couple of hours, she will stand in her place, but before starting the activity, prepare all the necessary materials and tools:

- Hacksaw for wood.
- Measuring roulette.
- Stairs, the height of which is 30 cm, must be greater than the original size.
- 4 card loops.
- Two beams along the width of the hatch + two beams that are 20 cm longer than the first, and the thickness of all four is two or three centimeters.
- Self-tapping screws.
- Anker.
- Hook and loop.
Progress
- Take a short beam and fasten it to the upper end of the ladder using the loops for this.
- The second is short, firmly set on the bottom.
- Take a tape measure and measure ⅔ of the total length, sawing then the marked place.
- Connect both parts with loops.
- In order to prevent the folding attic ladder from opening, strengthen the top bar under the hatch with a hook.

Advice!
It is very important to attach the hinges correctly, as this is necessary in order for the finished mechanism to open in the right direction.
Folding construction technology
A folding attic ladder, the basis of which is a hatch for overlapping, can be easily made with improvised means for everyone, especially since the price of the material spent does not exceed the finished ladder mechanism.

Follow the following instructions:
- Determine where the ladder will be, as well as the size of the hatch, as it forms the basis of the device.
- Add 8 mm to the obtained dimensions, which is necessary for a tight and easy closing of the hatch.
- Next, prepare 4 bars: 2 short and long, as well as a thin sheet of plywood. Size 50 to 50.
- Make cuts on the end of the bars, which should be exactly half of the thickness.
- Take glue, coat and secure with additional screws, then screw the plywood sheet.
- Try it on in the opening.
Note: the folding ladder to the attic is easy to open, so you can use the lock as a fixing of the general device to the ceiling.
If necessary, the latch opens and the ladder is at your disposal.
Attic ladder: swivel mechanism without spring

- First, make all the calculations, they will help in the future: opening angle, width, etc.
- Take care in advance that the corner - 1 piece, a piece of sheet material and 2 strips of various lengths are under the "hand". Based on the previously calculated figures, we mark the holes for the hinges, then we drill it under the bolt (M 10). We collect everything together, but it is not necessary to tighten the bolts strongly.
- We measure the required angle with the help of a bevel, and cut out the given angle using a jigsaw. After that, the sharp ends must be rounded, but only after the excess length has been removed. Based on a home-made mechanism, it is necessary to make exactly the same designs.
- Having fastened the finished part with clamps, we make a hole and insert a bolt into it. Then we proceed to the second in the same order, after which we level in length. We install ready-made mechanisms on the hatch.
Mounting the folding device in the opening:
- Attic folding stairs - built with your own hands, with incorrect calculations, it may not coincide with the declared height, so re-measure the length of the stairs so that it matches in height - from above to the ceiling, and from below to the floor. The opening should be larger than the attic.
- Fasten temporary additional boards to the bottom of the opening.
- Lay the mounting ladder on the auxiliary boards.
- Insert spacers into the edges of the opening.
- Secure the ladder box with 4 screws.
- Remove the boards from below and extend the ladder.
- Carefully! If installed incorrectly or loosely fastened, the ladder may fall, so follow the safety rules.
- Fix the side part of the ladder box with two bolts.
- Take the insulating material and fill in the space where it is (between the box and the opening).
- Loosen the side bolts a little, then open the lid, then secure them.
Conclusion
Attic folding stairs - made by hand, need processing of components. It is necessary to disassemble all component parts and apply a protective coating on them. (see also article Roof ladder features)
