Stairs made of natural wood are mainly used inside private houses - this material is not very suitable for outdoor use due to the rather low resistance of wood to external factors. In this material, we will talk about the main varieties of wooden stairs, as well as what kind of wood is best suited for their manufacture.
Classification of wooden stairs
All "home" wooden stairs can be divided into two main categories - mid-flight and spiral. It is noteworthy that mid-flight stairs also have several subspecies:
- Direct. The simplest and most common option, which is characterized by an elementary design. Often, such a staircase is the only straight span, the number of steps in which rarely exceeds 15 pieces.
- With platforms.A more complex option, which is used when “connecting” two floors. Such a staircase consists of two or more flights, which are united by small platforms.
- With running steps. A more compact version of the previous version. It differs in that its steps are in the form of a beam, which saves a little more space than in the case of a conventional straight or turning staircase with a platform.
As for spiral staircases, despite their impressive appearance, they are rarely used in practice. Basically, they are used in those houses where there is not enough space to accommodate a “full-fledged” mid-flight staircase.
What wood is suitable for making stairs?
For the wood used in the manufacture of stairs, high hardness (according to the Brinell method) and density are extremely important, which is always measured at the same moisture index - 12%. The most suitable are beech, oak, larch, and ash. Some workshops make stairs from pine - in terms of hardness, it is almost as hard as larch, but low density often leads to rapid wear of steps and other structural elements.
Where can I order a wooden staircase?
We categorically do not recommend that you buy such products in ordinary construction and furniture stores - most likely, you will become the owner of a product of dubious quality. The most reliable ladders are made by hand in specialized workshops. So, for example, the well-known Izhevsk company "Workshop of Stairs" carries out professional work, taking into account all the wishes of customers.
