Hitachi ZW220-6 Medium Wheel Loader

The Hitachi ZW220-6 is the first medium-sized wheel loader in the Dash-6 series from Hitachi Construction Machinery Loaders America (HCMA, formerly Kawasaki).

Operating weight is 38,910 pounds, and the 200-horsepower has a bucket capacity of 4.2 to 4.7 cubic yards. The breakout force is 34,170 pounds and the lift height is 13.5 feet.

The Dash-6 uses a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) SCR aftertreatment system that eliminates the need for a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF). Wheel loaders have more space in the engine bay, allowing for easier service access. According to the company, the new series reduces fuel costs by up to 7 percent in material handling operations.

Dash-6 wheel loaders are equipped with a ride control system, automatic switch-on and a color LCD monitor. Global e-Service combines with HCMA's Consite reporting software to provide remote monitoring, maintenance, daily performance data and monthly summary reports.

Wheel Loader Cab Features

According to the company, the pressurized cabin is virtually impervious to dust and dirt. The tilt/telescopic steering pedestal is equipped with a retractable pedal that, when pressed, returns the pedestal to its original position. The seamless front glass, rounded engine fairing and redesigned ROPS frame provide 360-degree visibility. The exhaust and intake pipes have been moved to the far rear edge of the engine cowling, which also improves the operator's visibility. The C-pillars of the ROPS frame are mounted forward and away from the rounded corners of the cab.

A rear-mounted security camera is standard, along with a proximity detection system that provides audible and visual alerts of stationary and moving objects up to 20 feet from the truck.

The transmission has two automatic and one manual modes. A hold switch overrides automatic settings and holds the transmission in the current gear, providing additional traction or torque. It is disabled when the operator presses the switch or changes direction.

The Power Mode switch allows the operator to increase engine RPM by 10%.It operates in either automatic or manual range and provides extra acceleration, rim traction and breakout force without limiting the maximum loader speed. Applications include digging in heavy piles, climbing slopes with a full load, and picking up speed quickly on level ground. Power Mode also improves hydraulic flow to the bucket.

The loader has a parallel/tandem hydraulic circuit with parallel tilt and lift. The tandem feature gives bucket priority when unloading, and the auto return to dig feature resets the bucket for the next load.

A new rear grill prevents raw materials from entering the radiator compartment and keeps debris out. An exhaust pipe air cleaner with built-in pre-cleaner removes large particulate matter from the incoming air, eliminating the need for a turbine-type pre-cleaner.
