How to choose a chandelier for a living room with low ceilings

Most city apartments, even those built according to modern designs, cannot boast of high ceilings. In the kitchen or in the bedroom, this lack does not cause much inconvenience, but in the living room the lack of free space is usually felt especially acutely. Therefore, it is so difficult to choose a chandelier for the living room, which will fit the interior and at the same time take up as little space as possible.

Criterias of choice

An unsuccessfully selected chandelier will not only affect the quality of lighting in the room, but also make the living room visually even smaller. Therefore, before buying, it is important to pay attention to the following characteristics.

Suspension type

A hanging chandelier is definitely not suitable for a living room with a low ceiling.Perhaps it looks more aesthetically pleasing, but too much valuable free space will be spent on the suspension. In addition, in a small room, such a chandelier is very easy to hit with your head or hands. Therefore, first of all, you should pay attention to models that are mounted directly on the ceiling.

Power

Since the chandelier will be attached close to the ceiling, you need to choose lamps that will not damage it when heated. This is especially important if the living room has a stretch ceiling or panel coverings. But even in the case of concrete ceilings, which are less susceptible to high temperatures, it is better to stop at the option with medium power lamps. Otherwise, the currents of warm air, constantly rising up, can eventually lead to the appearance of dark spots on their surface.

Light direction

The ideal option is a chandelier with horns pointing upwards. So the light will be reflected from the ceiling and spread evenly throughout the living room. In this case, the horns should be small and rounded.

Important! This option is not suitable for ceiling coverings that are sensitive to heat. If a stretch ceiling is installed in the living room, you should look at the universal model with horns pointing in different directions, or use only LED lamps.

Decor elements

Refuse models with a large number of hanging and convex parts - they visually reduce the height of the ceilings. The size of the shades should be compact, like the design itself, in order to take up as little space as possible. If it seems that the light from such a chandelier is not enough, you can supplement it with wall sconces. For modern interiors in the style of minimalism and hi-tech, elongated chandeliers tightly pressed to the ceiling are suitable.

Such concise models without unnecessary details will perfectly fit into an ascetic environment, and at the same time they will practically not spend precious centimeters of ceiling height. An interesting way to visually increase the height of the ceiling is to choose a chandelier with a mirrored base. The light, reflected in the mirror, will create the illusion of space, and the lack of free space will no longer attract attention so much.
