Cast iron pans are very popular because they can last a long time. The only thing that can harm such dishes is inaccurate use. You need to constantly monitor the condition of the pan. Today we will tell you what to do if brown spots (corrosion) appear on a cast-iron pan.
Reasons for the destruction of the cast iron surface
First of all, you need to understand the reasons why this problem appears. Most often, this is due to the fact that the pan remains in the water for a long time. Due to prolonged contact with moisture, cast iron begins to corrode, causing brown spots to appear. To avoid such problems, you need to wash the dishes in a timely manner, as well as wipe them dry.But these are far from all the reasons that the cast iron pan is corroded. This may also be due to the fact that it has not been used for a long time.
If you do not use the dishes for a large amount of time, it is still worth periodically filling it with sunflower oil. But this can only be done in a completely clean pan. Another cause of corrosion can be a careless attitude to the dishes. It must be washed immediately after use, because food particles can be introduced into cast iron and spoil it. If you just bought a cast iron pan, do not use abrasive detergents. They can simply erase the protective layer applied to the surface of the dishes.
How to get rid of corrosion
If corrosion has already appeared, it can be easily removed. To do this, you need to use the oven. The fact is that corrosion disappears under the influence of high temperatures. It is worth immersing the dishes in the oven, and turn it on for 30 minutes. It is worth setting the self-cleaning mode. If there is no such mode, set the power to 150 degrees. After 30 minutes, turn off the oven and let the dishes cool down. Now it remains just to wash it with any detergent, and the corrosion will simply disappear.
Prevention
Below is a method by which you can process a cast iron pan. It is suitable not only for new dishes. It can even be used for those pans that have already been corroded.
- First, rub vegetable oil over the surface of the pan. You can use any oil except olive oil.
- If you carry out this procedure using olive oil, an unpleasant odor will appear during cooking.
- When the pan has been soaked in vegetable oil, you should heat the oven to 180 degrees. When it is hot, you should put the pan.
- You need to put it upside down. This procedure is called roasting.
The firing will be done within 60 minutes. When the specified amount of time has passed, you will need to turn off the oven and leave the dishes inside until it cools completely. When it has cooled down, wash the pan thoroughly using only a soft sponge. After that, the chance of corrosion will be much reduced.
